BREAST HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION

1. BICYCLIST LANCE ARMSTRONG PROMOTES "CYCLE OF HOPE" CANCER EDUCATION CAMPAIGN
As Lance Armstrong enters the final week of the Tour de France bicycling competition, he continues to promote his "Cycle of Hope" cancer awareness campaign. The 29-year old Armstrong, who is currently defending his two Tour de France champion titles, is also a survivor of advanced testicular cancer. As spokesperson for "Cycle of Hope," Armstrong encourages everyone to "know your cancer risks and get screened." Specifically, the goals of "Cycle of Hope" are to encourage early cancer detection, reduce fear associated with cancer, and encourage a team approach to cancer treatment.

2. MORE CONFIRMATION: REMOVING BOTH BREASTS REDUCES CANCER RISK FOR HIGH RISK PATIENTS
Undergoing a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy, the preventive removal of both breasts, significantly reduces the chances of developing breast cancer in women who carry gene mutations that put them at very high risk for the disease, according to a new Dutch study. The Dutch study confirms an earlier study conducted by Mayo Clinic researchers which also found that prophylactic mastectomy greatly reduces breast cancer risk. However, longer follow-up is needed to determine whether the decreased breast cancer risk remains throughout a woman’s lifetime.

3. UNDERSTANDING HERCEPTIN AND HER2
Herceptin (generic name, trastuzumab) is a new drug used to treat some women with advanced breast cancer whose cancer has spread to other areas of the body. Clinical trials are also investigating whether Herceptin is helpful for women with early-stage breast cancers. This article discusses how Herceptin works, candidates for the drug, and what "HER2 testing" is and why it is important for many breast cancer patients.

4. COMPUTER-AIDED DETECTION (CAD) GETS FURTHER VALIDATION FOR CANCER DETECTION
A computer-aided detection (CAD) system called the RapidScreen RS-2000 has recently received premarket approval by the U.S. FDA to help screen for lung cancer. CAD, which is already approved for use with mammography, helps physicians spot cancer and other abnormalities by marking them on digitized films (on mammograms for breast cancer, on chest x-rays for lung cancer). After the radiologist makes his or her initial interpretation of the patient's films, the CAD technology can be used to determine whether any potentially suspicious areas need further study. Studies have shown that when used with mammography, CAD can increase breast cancer detection.

5. ILLINOIS MANDATES BREAST-FEEDING BREAKS FOR NEW MOTHERS
On July 13, 2001 Illinois Governor George Ryan signed a new law that require employers to make it easier for nursing mothers to pump or manually express breast milk during the workday. Under the "Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act," mothers are entitled to take reasonable unpaid breaks to express milk in a nearby room which provides adequate privacy. Some businesses have the option of disregarding the law if it greatly interferes with their operations.

BREAST CANCER DISCUSSION BOARD, RECENT POSTING

"I will be having delayed reconstruction in a month. After getting 3 different recommendations (2 for implant, 1 for latismus dorsi) I have (I think) decided to go with an implant. This has been a very difficult decision for me. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had implants. Have you been satisfied with your decision, did you have a lift on the other side, have you had any complications, etc. ? Thanks!"
