MORE DEBATE ABOUT BENEFITS OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY A recent widely publicized editorial is raising more questions about the true benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT is synthetic estrogen and/or progesterone designed to "replace" a woman’s depleting hormone levels at menopause. An estimated 20 million American women take some form of HRT to relieve menopausal symptoms, prevent bone loss, or reap other benefits. However, recent studies have raised doubts about the advantages of taking HRT, including whether or not HRT can reduce bone fractures. RESEARCHERS INVESTIGATE NON-INVASIVE TEST FOR DETECTING COLON CANCER Using non-invasive computed tomography (CT) may detect colon cancer as accurately as conventional colonoscopy, according to a new report.  Dubbed “virtual colonoscopy,” the new technique involves taking multiple CT scans of the patient’s colon and then reconstructing the images with a computer to create a three-dimensional picture of the colon.  While the study did reveal some limitations of virtual colonoscopy, the researchers say the technique may be useful for patients who are unable or unwilling to undergo conventional colonoscopy.  Click here to read more: http://www.imaginis.com/ct-scan/news/news6.27.01.asp 3. SOY AND BREAST CANCER Recently, soy foods and products have generated much discussion in the healthcare industry and among the public. HEART ATTACK FACTS A heart attack is a serious result of coronary artery disease, a condition that occurs when the arteries become narrow or hardened due to cholesterol plaque build-up. A heart attack can occur when a coronary artery is so severely blocked that there is a significant reduction or break in the blood supply, causing damage or death to a portion of the heart muscle. GENERAL INFO ON MAMMOGRAMS Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast. I completed chemo and radiation treatments. I have been experiencing a lot of joint pain that wasn't there a year ago. X-rays of my left shoulder indicated arthritis and the shoulder is quite painful. I had swelling and pain in the left ankle which is also arthritis. My oncologist seemed to think the pain was normal. My GP is the one who ordered the films and made the determination. He also stated that sometimes oncologists don't want to recognize that chemo treatments sometimes cause arthritis in some patients. He recommended a daily application of arthritis cream and suggested a cortisone injection for the shoulder. I have tried the cream but haven't noticed any great improvement. Has anyone else experienced joint pain such as this following treatment and if so, what have you done to relieve the pain. Thanks."
