WOMEN'S HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION

1. NEW REPORT SHOWS LATEST TRENDS IN CANCER: MOST CANCER RATES DOWN BUT BREAST CANCER RATE UP
The overall rate at which Americans were either diagnosed with or died from cancer decreased in the 1990s, according to a new report. This is a reverse in the pattern of increasing cancer rates that occurred from 1973 to 1992. However, breast cancer and a few other cancers were exceptions to the decline. The rate of breast cancer actually increased by more than 40% from 1973 to 1998. The report also shows increases in the number of female deaths from lung cancer, and increases in the incidence of other cancers including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, liver cancer, and melanoma skin cancer.

2. MORE U.S. STATES APPROVED TO PARTICIPATE IN BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION AND TREATMENT ACT TO HELP LOW INCOME WOMEN
Six more U.S. states have completed the steps required to provide aid to low income women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer through a federally funded program.  The Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000 (public law 106-354) was signed by former President Clinton in October 2000 and allows states to provide eligible women with Medicaid coverage to pay for the cost of breast or cervical cancer treatment.   The six states, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, South Dakota, and Utah, join a handful of others that have been approved to participate in the program.

3. HOW TO PERFORM A BREAST SELF-EXAM
Regularly examining her own breasts allows a woman to become familiar with how her breasts normally look and feel and can help her more readily detect any changes that may occur. Women should perform breast self-exams once each month beginning at age 20. This article, complete with illustrations, describes the step-by-step process of performing a breast self exam while lying down, standing up, and in the shower.

4. STAGING BREAST CANCER AND AVERAGE SURVIVAL RATES BY STAGE
Staging is a process physicians use to assess the size and location of a patient’s cancer. Identifying the cancer's stage is one of the most important factors in selecting treatment options. While the medical circumstances of each patient are different, knowing the stage of the cancer can also help predict the patient's chances of surviving the disease. This article describes each stage of breast cancer and provides typical treatments for each stage. Average survival rates based on each stage are also provided.

5. BREAST CANCER CARE KIT FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS
The Baptist Outpatient Center in Miami, Florida is in the process of creating a breast cancer care kit, which includes various items designed to provide comfort and information to newly diagnosed women.  This kit will include a journal for thoughts/appointments, scented sachets, teas, and educational information from various cancer related organizations/FAQs. Initially Baptist plans to produce 1000 kits for patients of the five hospital Baptist Health System in South Florida, with the hope of distributing the kit statewide.  Anyone interesting in helping to support this important women's health project with funding or other resources should contact Barbara Ann Perez via email at Barbarap@bhssf.org.
