MORE DATA SHOWS OSTEOPOROSIS DRUG, RALOXIFENE, MAY ALSO REDUCE POST-MENOPAUSAL BREAST CANCER RISK Results from the MORE clinical trial (Multiple Outcomes of Raloxifene Evaluation) add to previous research which shows that the drug raloxifene (brand name, Evista) may significantly reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Raloxifene is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help prevent or treat osteoporosis, a degenerative bone disease that affects roughly one in two women over age 50. Raloxifene is similar in composition to the drug tamoxifen (brand name, Nolvadex), which is FDA approved to help prevent and treat breast cancer. While further research on raloxifene is necessary, data suggests that raloxifene may be as effective as tamoxifen in preventing breast cancer without the small increased risk of endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining) that is associated with tamoxifen. UNDERSTANDING BREAST PAIN Breast pain (mastalgia) is the most common breast related complaint among women; nearly 70% of women experience breast pain at some point in their lives. Breast pain may occur in one or both breasts or in the underarm (axilla) region of the body. Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare form of rapidly advancing breast cancer that usually accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses. Because inflammatory breast cancer progresses quickly, it should be differentiated by physicians from other forms of advanced breast cancer with similar characteristics. This article discusses the signs and symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer, and explains how the cancer is diagnosed and treated. THERMOGRAPHY/COMPUTERIZED THERMAL IMAGING Thermography was approved by the U.S. FDA in 1982 as a supplement to mammography in helping to detect breast cancer; computerized thermal imaging (CTI) is a new, non-invasive imaging method that is being developed using the principles of traditional thermography but with the addition of digital image reconstruction. I had a surgical biopsy performed and also cauterized the ducts and all was benign. The surgeon did not have any explanation for the discharge. She just said that the darn thing won't bleed anymore since I cauterized them all. The bleeding happened when just sleeping, walking, talking. I am post menopausal, 53yrs.old, with a partial hysterectomy 20yrs ago. I have had continuous cysts aspirated and benign. I have dense breast tissue also. I now have a lump the size of a raisin. But it is hard, but movable. I am seeing the Doc tomorrow. My ? is, are all cancerous tumors of the breast, attached? I am the 1st daughter born to a mother that died of breast cancer at age 47. I am worried about having to go through open biopsy again, or needle biopsy without any sedation. So petrified of it, that I have put off going in to see the Doc about this lump. Help!"
