EXPERTS PREDICT INCREASE IN BREAST AND PROSTATE CANCER CASES OVER NEXT 20 YEARS At a meeting of charity organizations, British medical experts predicted an increase in the number of breast and prostate cancer diagnoses in many industrialized countries but a decrease in the number of overall cancer deaths over the next 20 years. The experts attributed the increase in breast and prostate cancer cases to an aging population since the risk of both cancers increases as people get older. The decrease in overall cancer deaths is due to improved detection and treatments. The experts also made predictions about other cancers, including lung and cervical cancer. UNDERSTANDING YOUR MAMMOGRAPHY REPORT A mammogram report is a key component of the breast cancer diagnostic process. While a mammogram cannot definitively determine whether a woman has breast cancer, it may indicate whether a breast abnormality is present, and if so, it may characterize that abnormality. WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BREAST CANCER GENETIC TESTING? Every woman carries the BRCA1 (breast cancer gene 1) and BRCA2 (breast cancer gene 2) genes. When functioning normally, these genes help repair damage to DNA--a process that also prevents tumor development. However, researchers have discovered that some women carry mutations of these genes that put them at higher-than-average risk of developing breast cancer. Genetic testing is available to determine whether a woman carries these BRCA mutations. This article discusses how the genetic testing works and outlines the advantages and disadvantages of knowing the test results. MRI imaging and MRI angiography are finding a greater role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, heart attack, acute stroke and vascular disease which can lead to stroke. Additionally, MRI imaging is a vital part of diagnosing and treating sports injuries, and MRI is playing an increasing role in the breast cancer diagnostic process. MRI is also a powerful tool for finding and diagnosing many other forms of cancer.
