1. STUDIES FIND FEMARA MORE EFFECTIVE THAN TAMOXIFEN FOR ADVANCED BREAST CANCER
Two new studies show that the drug Femara (generic name, letrozole) may be more effective
than tamoxifen for post-menopausal women with advanced breast cancer. Femara is currently
approved by the U.S. FDA as a second-line treatment for advanced breast cancer, to be used
when other therapies do not work. However, researchers believe that based on this
research, Femara should be considered as a first option, a "first-line therapy,"
for treating some women with advanced breast cancer.

2. RESEARCHERS TESTING NON-INVASIVE TECHNIQUE TO KILL BREAST CANCER TUMORS
Researchers are investigating a new non-invasive, more patient-friendly method of treating
breast cancer. The procedure, which uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to locate the
tumor and high energy sound waves to "cook" the tumor to death with heat, is
being tested in a clinical trial at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
If the treatment is successful, it may one day eliminate the need for breast cancer
surgery for many women.

3. 'SHAFT' HAS BREAST CANCER: MEN CAN DEVELOP THE DISEASE TOO
When Richard Roundtree, the actor who played the original witty private investigator John
Shaft in three films, announced that he had breast cancer, many men and women were
surprised to learn that men could develop breast cancer too. Though far less common than
female breast cancer, the American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 1,400 new
cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2000 and approximately 400 men
will die from breast cancer this year. Detecting breast cancer early, as Roundtree did,
can help increase the chances of surviving the disease.

4. FALSE RUMOR SAYING ANTIPERSPIRANTS CAUSE BREAST CANCER CONTINUES TO CIRCULATE
For well over a year, an inaccurate e-mail message has been broadly circulated stating
that the use of antiperspirants is a leading cause of breast cancer. The false e-mail
message, claiming antiperspirants or antiperspirant/deodorant combinations interfere with
the body’s need to purge dangerous "toxins," is angering health care
professionals and alarming women across the United States. Researchers have found no link
between antiperspirants and the risk of breast cancer.

5. FDA ISSUES WARNING ABOUT INGREDIENT FOUND IN MANY DIET AND COLD MEDICATIONS
The U.S. FDA has asked pharmaceutical manufacturers to voluntarily stop marketing diet
pills or cold medication products that contain phenylpropanolamine (PPA) because the
ingredient has been linked to an increased risk of stroke. PPA has been available in
many diet pills and cold medications for years. However, a study conducted by Yale
researchers and sponsored by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), an
organization which represents over-the-counter drug manufacturers, found that PPA can
increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, primarily in women.

6. IMAGINIS SUPPORTS ACS MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER

7. BEAUTYWISE HELPS CANCER PATIENTS FEEL BETTER, COPE WITH SIDE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT
Beautywise was created by Lourdes Rodriguez-Lorie, who lost her mother to cancer.
Beautywise offers a line of extra-gentle cosmetic and skin care products designed for
cancer patients who are undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Beautywise has also
initiated a patient support group called "Holistic Tune Up" at the University of
Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The support group helps cancer patients look
and feel better during treatment. A portion of all Beautywise sales proceeds is donated to
